Frequently asked questions

  1. Can symptoms show up years after a tick bite?
Yes, people can develop symptoms long after the initial tick bite. What happens is co-infections, like HHV-6 (Human Herpes Virus 6), emerge causing the symptoms mentioned. Every case of course is different but almost 100% of people with chronic Lyme also show evidence of HHV-6 involvement upon testing. We may be ahead of ourselves. Testing will clarify the possible causes of your daughter's health concerns.
  2. What are some of the symptoms of chronic lyme disease?
Fatigue is a very common symptom. Other symptoms can range from swelling and painful joints to a loss of focus. Chronic lyme disease can also cause peripheral neuropathy which is weakness, tingling, pain, and/or numbness of the extremities, usually of the hands and/or feet.
  3. What should I do if I was recently bitten by a tick and am concerned?
Consult your medical provider as soon as possible. Medication may be prescribed. Lanzisera Center only treats lyme cases that have become chronic.
  4. How common is lyme disease in Florida? Can children be infected?
The Florida Lyme Disease Association states that Florida is among the top 20 states for the number of lyme disease cases reported each year. Children are at the greatest risk of contracting this disease. They are also more susceptible to central nervous system infections.
  5. It seems like everyone I know with Lyme disease has other diseases as well, why?
Lyme disease can cause a wide range of symptoms which can make it difficult to diagnose. It is known as "the great imitator" because it can be mistaken for other diseases like autism, fibromyalgia, multiple sclerosis, chronic fatigue syndrome, ALS, Parkinson's, and Alzheimer's.
